Wow, this has been a winter like no other for all of us at Covey Rise Farms; rest assure, we just keep planting. The last frost date according to the Farmer’s Almanac is March 10th and the weather forecast looks great for the next 10 days. We are going to a have a big harvest or a really big harvest come spring-either way we will be ready April 9th to make our first delivery to Simplee Gourmet of our local produce club shares. We have: carrots beets, turnips, lettuce mix, arugula, mizuna, kale, chard, curly mustard, red mustard, red Russian, radishes, shallots, red lesoda potatoes, fingerling sweet potatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, red & white spring onions, pok choy, parsley, thyme, oregano & sorel all planted and should be coming out of the ground mid-April. The Fall 2013 local produce club will be ending on December 18th; we are no longer accepting members at this time.  We started the 12 week season with the end of summer harvest and have been enjoying lots of broccoli, turnips, salad mix, arugula, kale, chard, cauliflower, carrots, radishes, cabbage, satsumas, shallots & sweet potatoes lately.  We will be sending out an email to mailing list and past season members in late February with details for the Spring.  We love the idea of feeding families in our area and appreciate the commitment on your part to eating seasonally and locally.

This time next week we will be loading up the truck with veggies for out first delivery of the fall season.  Just thought I would tempt those of you who have not signed up yet with what is coming out of the field at the moment. We have been harvesting many varieties of the following: squash, eggplant, okra, mizuna, arugula, shallots, kale, chard, mustard, radishes, turnips, sweet potatoes, bell peppers, sweet peppers & sunflowers.  The lettuce mix is still a bit bitter from the heat but it is not far behind; we also have some pink eye and crowder peas in the field that should be ready soon.   We are planting the cole crops each week in anticipation of plenty coming out of the field for you for the next 12 weeks.

We are seriously feeling the "dog days" here; there has been rain all around us but not a drop on the farm. Louis, Ben and Grady have been hard at work in the field getting ready for fall. The sign ups for the produce club are now open however, we do have a few changes.  After much thought, we will not have the Rouses's Southshore delivery location this season; it really stressed both production in the field and processing shed.  We will definitely access this again in the spring and should harvest amounts and membership support come together, we will try again.  In the meantime, many of our core offerings are available through Hollygove market, now open 7 days a week.  For those of you on the Northshore, we will again be at Simplee Gourmet on Wednesdays from 12:30-5:00.  Click on Local Produce Club/CSA for details and to sign up to receive 12 weeks of fresh vegetables from our farm to your table.

Our spring/summer local produce club season is winding down and we are no longer accepting memberships.  We will be rolling out the fall/winter season signups at the end of August with the first deliveries taking place in late September.  The typical share of our produce club entitles you to 6-8 items per week in a quantity sufficient to feed a family of four. The produce you receive will vary each week; we are growing over 30 types of vegetables each season.  Please join our mailing list if you are interested in receiving notices about our program.

There is nothing like a good, vine ripened tomato!!!  We are thrilled to be offering our restaurants and local produce club members a huge variety of tomatoes:  we have 12 heirlooms, 11 cherries , 4 romas and 11 slicers.  The bushes are loaded!!!

We had our first delivery yesterday to Simplee Gourmet in Covington and the harvest was a big hit.  The share consisted of:  broccoli, red mustard, carrots, yellow beets, lettuce mix, spring onions, watermelon radishes and parsley.  We still have shares available at all three locations, so don't miss out on eating fresh. We are excited to now offer our Local Produce Club/CSA to the New Orleans area.  Covey Rise Farms will have a pickup location inside Rouses Supermarket #29 located at 400 N. Carrollton Avenue on Wednesdays from 3:00-7:00 pm beginning April 17th.  Our Saturday pickup will be from 12:00-4:00 pm  beginning April 13th inside Rouses Supermarket #25 located at 2900 Veternas Blvd.  Please click on Local Produce Club/CSA for more information or email

We are now accepting members for the Covey Rise Farms Spring/Summer 2013 Local Produce Club. The first deliveries of the 12 week season will be April 10th.  The typical share of our produce club entitles you to 6-8 items per week in a quantity sufficient to feed a family of four. The produce you receive will vary each week; we are growing over 30 types of vegetables each season.  We will begin the season harvesting beets, carrots, turnips,lettuce, greens, pok choy and as the weather warms up we will move into the summer crops.  We ask that you commit $396.00 for the entire season ($33.00 per week).  Click on  Local Produce Club/CSA for information and to join.
